We Dig : Megan Sue Hicks
Share
The first time I heard Megan Sue Hicks was on the great compilation Follow The Sun compiled by Mikey Young and released on the Anthology label in 2017. The track Hey Can You Come Out And Play was a standout of that compilation and almost immediately I went to find more. A quick Discogs search came up with just one release, an album called Maranatha from 1972. It had rarely been sold and the only copy for sale was $750. There was a reason for this, there were only 200 ever made so it was a scarce record.
I’m not fully across the story of the release but Megan was an American who resided in Australia for a couple of years in the early 70’s. In this time, she recorded this album with The Flying Circus as her backing band. Somehow it ended up in the hands of Warner Australia and they gave it a very limited release of 200 copies, and then it was forgotten about.
Over the years it has become a cult favourite as people have discovered the album on-line, a psych folk masterpiece that wouldn’t be out of place among Joni Mitchell’s catalogue. When we first started talking about starting Red Ash, we came up with a list of hundreds of potential albums that deserve a reissue, and this one sat towards the top. While we didn’t get to do it, Elemental Music have done a fantastic job of this first ever reissue, which now makes it available to more people at a much more affordable price.
